At present there are pattern files for
GIMP.
In
this page you can also find GIMP brushes.
All of the above GIMP files can be used in GIMP for Windows as well as the Linux versions.
Patterns
The file: pat_gimp.zip (395 kb) contains 15 patterns (screenshot from the program - in reduced size below)
The above patterns have been included in the distributions of the windows GIMP port since July 22, 2000; I am honored :-)
Some newer patterns are below with larger screenshots:

Apart from these, once you have some experience with GIMP, you will find that you can save as many images from my tiles section as you like, load in GIMP and save as PAT files in your GIMP patterns' directory.
There are also some
Displacement patterns
for water-like effects. Download the file:
displace_pat.zip (104 kb).
Why use patterns for displacement? Well, because they are tileable, so they can be used on any size image.
See directions for use at the bottom of the page. (they are included in the Readme file)
If you look at my
Corel page, you will find that the results are about 95 % similar. A setting of 6 horizontally and vertically was used for the displacement filter in the examples below.

Help
- To use these pattern files, first unzip them to your home_directory\.gimp1.x\patterns\ directory (or wherever you have installed your personal user files). In Windows NT, 2000 and XP, your home_directory is usually c:\winnt\profiles\user_name (or administrator if you are the only user).
- Next time you start GIMP, or refresh the view of patterns, they will be available to you.
- Some patterns are largish in size (up to 200 X 200 pixels), so that they can be used in larger images. They all tile seamlessly.
- To unzip a file, you need an unzipping program. If you don't have one, two good ones for Windows are: WinZip (shareware) and Power Archiver (shareware), plus many freeware ones.
- Method for the use of displacement patterns: Add a new layer to your image, select all and fill with the pattern. Make this top layer non visible. Choose the layer of your image and, if necessary the area, that you want to use the displacement on. Choose filters->map->displace. Enter your numerical values. After you are done, you can delete the top layer, that you filled with the displace pattern.
NOTE: Your image must have some details to apply the displacement effect; it will not work on an image filled with a color only, since it is not an bump map, although the use of the patterns as bump maps would be interesting :-).
Use of these files is under the same terms as the use of GIMP - free.
