Welcome to my Terragen gallery. You can also download the files used for these images (whatever survived my absentmindedness and a crash).

At last I have updated my Terragen pages, after a long time. These are my best Terragen images; a lot didn't turn out any good, and seeing the (much better) images of some others isn't exactly encouraging.

These are some links that I have collected so far, about Terragen.

• The official Terragen site. This is where you will go to read about Terragen, download it, register it and read the tutorial.
• Terrasource, a site that promises to become your one-stop source for all your Terragen needs.
• Terranet with lots of links to Terragen resources.

Terragen up to v0.9+ only

• The Sopack site. Sopack is a plugin that will let you do various cool things in Terragen, like image overlays on surface textures, strata, sepia or black and white renders and many more.
• The Firmament site. Firmament is a plugin for Terragen and it lets you use BMPs for Terrains, also open DTED files and Mars STM IMG files.
• Water Works is a plugin for cool effects to water (and more). There is also the FEO program on this site, that lets you import and export a terrain as BMP (plus other formats) and vice versa.
• Alistair Milne's LensFX is a Terragen (0.9+) plugin that adds lens effects (depth of field) and exports depth buffers.
• TerraTweak is a Terragen (0.9+) world tweaking program for advanced users. Most useful uses are: increasing the sky size beyond the maximum 10,000, making new bump patterns, animating all values etc.

Terrain creation and manipulation - DEM conversion

• The 3DEM site. 3DEM is a freeware program that will open and merge DEMs (and other elevation formats) and save as Terragen terrains.
• Microdem is a free program for viewing, converting, combining and analyzing various GIS (DEM and more) data. It has a certain learning curve and is comparable to the very good (commercial) Global Mapper.
• The Wilbur site. Wilbur is a freeware program that lets you make Terragen terrains (mostly by painting them - good for buildings etc.), open and convert between various DEM formats.
• Terrapainter is a freeware program that lets you paint structures, similarly to Wilbur above.
• Worldmachine (free for personal use) is a program that lets you make your own terrains, more natural (or unnatural) than those made by Terragen. It uses a unique way of combining various functions.
• Terraformer2 is another freeware program that lets you generate, manipulate (terrace - erode) and merge terrains. I don't know of a homepage, but you can download it from Terradreams.de (scroll down, until you see the program name).

Terrain data sources

• Some sources for USA DEMs:
  • edc.usgs.gov
  • gisdatadepot.com
  • agdc.usgs.gov
  • USGS, for 1:24,000 and 1:250,000 DEMs of the United States.
• Some sources for DEMs of the rest of the world.
  • Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. The original source for HGT SRTM DEMs. Unfortunately, the FTP link is dead.
  • CGIAR-CSI SRTM 90m DEM Digital Elevation Database has 90 m SRTM Geotif DEMs.
  • USGS seamless server
    
  • GLCF: Shuttle Radar Topography Mission
    All of the above have similar data.
  • GTOPO30 and more GTOPO30 has 1 km data (useful for renderings from space). This was the only sort of data that was available for countries outside the U.S.A. for a long time.
  • NGDC for ETOPO5. This is a lower resolution elevation map (5 km), but it includes ocean beds - very useful for transparent water. I have not tried the version 2, mentioned to be more accurate.
• Sources of Mars and other out-of-this-world DEMs
  • A source for Mars DEMs (the files starting from t contain terrain data).
  • MOLA 64 Mars DEMs (large size, about 127 Mbytes each).
  • If you can understand what to search for (I am lost there ...), Planetary Data Systems - Quick search has the most recent information and data on all planets.

Use of these files is free, but you may not claim them as your own, unless modified beyond recognition. Use of the images made by them is subject to the terms of your Terragen license.
